The Best Throw Pillows for Comfort and Style
May 25, 2026
A short guide to the throw pillows that actually feel as good as they look — the ones I keep buying for my own sofa.
Throw pillows are the easiest, cheapest way to make a room feel finished. They are also the easiest thing to get wrong — too small, too stiff, or covered in a fabric that pills after one nap.
After a lot of trial and error on my own couch, these are the two I keep recommending to friends.
What actually matters
Three things separate a great throw pillow from a sad, flat one:
- Insert quality. A down-alternative or feather insert that is 1–2 inches larger than the cover gives that plump, magazine-shoot look.
- Cover fabric. Cotton velvet, linen, and bouclé all age beautifully. Polyester satin does not.
- Mix of sizes. One 22-inch square + one 12x20 lumbar reads more intentional than three matching 18-inch squares.
1. Mika Velvet Throw Pillow
This is the pillow I keep buying. The cotton-velvet pile is dense enough to look luxurious but not so shiny that it feels formal. The hidden zipper makes washing the cover easy, and the insert holds its shape after a year on a daily-use sofa.
I like it in the deeper tones — rust, forest, ink blue — against a neutral linen couch.
2. Stonewashed Linen Lumbar Cover
A lumbar pillow is the secret weapon. Layered in front of a square velvet pillow, it breaks the symmetry and instantly makes the sofa look styled instead of staged.
This linen cover is the slightly-slubby, soft-handed kind that gets better with every wash. Pair it with a generous down-alternative insert (look for 12x22 to over-stuff the 12x20 cover).
How I style them
For a three-seater sofa, I use:
- Two 22-inch velvet squares at the outer corners
- One linen lumbar centered in front
- A folded chunky knit throw draped over one arm
That is it. Anything more starts to feel like a furniture showroom.
